Getting Involved: Red Ribbon Week

Some of you may have heard about Red Ribbon Week through your children’s schools, or perhaps you’ve participated in a Red Ribbon Week campaign yourself.  Either way, here is everything that you need to know about Red Ribbon Week 2018.

Red Ribbon Week is held during the week of October 23-31 each year.  It is an opportunity to bring awareness to the risks and consequences of drug and alcohol use.  Red Ribbon Week was created when DEA agent Kiki Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985. Red Ribbons were then used to display intolerance to drugs across the country.  Every year Red Ribbon Campaigns across the country touch the lives of millions, and it is the largest drug prevention program in the nation.  This year’s theme is “Life is Your Journey.  Travel Drug Free”.

Red Ribbon Week activities and campaigns aren’t just for your children’s schools.  You can play a part in making Red Ribbon Week successful in your own home!  Here’s how:

  1. Enter the Red Ribbon Week photo contest!  Simply decorate your front door, mailbox, or fence around the theme “Life is your journey.  Travel drug free”.  Submit your photo by November 1 at redribbon.org for the chance to win your child’s school $1,000 and an iPad!
  2. Take the 2018 Red Ribbon Adult/ Parent Pledge here and pledge to help our youth live healthy and drug free lives!
  3. Talk with your children about the risks and consequences of drug use!  Did you know that the children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those that don’t?
